(The following letter is in response to a recent article titled ‘Biggest development project Oakville will ever undertake: Town finalizing plans for Midtown’)
Here’s to hoping that the proposed development plan for Oakville does not repeat past mistakes.
Over the last year, officials have been meeting and discussing the construction of Midtown Oakville, stated to be filled with buildings up to 58 stories high. Built on the edge of Oakville is a GO station, this area is supposed to accommodate the exploding amount of people moving to this town.

I personally don’t want a high-rise built right beside my Oakville neighborhood, so if development needs to happen, let it happen in an empty space.
As lovely as it looks, Oakville is yet another town guilty of intense urban sprawl and a car-dependent population. It’s too late for our city to combat this issue with standing development, therefore I am all for accommodating the predicted density increase by building a hub of well-planned high rises.
I’ve read lots of concerns about the quality of life expected in this new development, since tall buildings are associated with poor air quality and that lovely big city crime rate. However I do believe if the proposal goes as planned, Midtown can be an opportunity for the Town to — in my opinion — redeem its poor city planning, and bring in the young single opportunities.
I trust Midtown Oakville will attract the right kind of people for the right reasons, and if done right, could make for a way better planned area for those who are sick of fields of identical houses and 20 min drives to sprawling malls.
